S.S. Nicholson
This painting depicts the American WWI destroyers USS Nicholson (DD-52) and USS Fanning (DD-37) rescuing German submariners of U-58. Both were on Eastern Atlantic Convoy duty out of Queenstown, Ireland. This painting depicts when they rescued the crew of the German submarine U-58 on the afternoon of 17 November 1917. S.S. Conyngham
USS Conyngham (DD-58) was built by Cramp at Philadelphia in 1915 for the US Navy. Transferred to the Coast Guard in 1924 and commissioned by the Coast Guard as CG-2 in 1925. Decommissioned in 1932 and returned to the Navy, but not recommissioned. Sold for scrap, 1924.

PCE-1207, Pilgrim Belle
Vessel at left built at Morris Heights, NJ in 1943 as a submarine chaser a) PCE-1207. Converted to passenger excursion vessel SEA BELLE by the Wilson Line in 1953. Withdrawn in the early 1960s; in 1995 partially scrapped remains were lying at Little Creek, VA. Vessel at right is PILGRIM BELLE a) BRANDYWINE b) DIXIE.
